Mustard Seed Communities Zimbabwe
The Shamwari-Umngane Initiative
Friendship. Learning. Sustainable Impact.
Our Vision
The Shamwari-Umngane Initiative (meaning friendship in Shona and companion in Ndebele) connects people across cultures to support sustainable, community-led development.
At its core, the initiative strengthens Mustard Seed Communities’ work across nutrition, education, and sustainable development in Zimbabwe.
A Unique Learning & Immersion Experience
The Shamwari-Umngane Initiative offers participants the opportunity to experience the full scope of Mustard Seed Communities’ (MSC) work on the ground in Zimbabwe.
Over 7 days participants are immersed in daily life within MSC’s communities in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, engaging across key programme areas:
- Nutrition:
Support and learn from feeding programmes, gaining insight into the realities of food insecurity and how sustainable agriculture is helping reduce dependence over time. - Education:
Spend time in Mustards Seed’s Little Angels early childhood and education settings, seeing how children are supported to learn, grow, and thrive in safe, nurturing environments. - Sustainable Livelihoods:
Engage with communities through community gardens – and understand the importance of sustainable long-term solutions to underpin food security.
Participants don’t just observe – they connect the dots between immediate needs and sustainable development, understanding how these programmes work together to create lasting impact.
Our Impact
Shamwari–Umngane volunteers play a vital role in strengthening both daily care programmes and long-term development initiatives.
Through fundraising, participation, and advocacy, they help to:
- Provide nutritious meals for children and families
- Support education and developmental programmes
- Grow community and household gardens
This integrated approach ensures that:
- Immediate needs are met
- Families are supported holistically
- Communities build resilience and independence over time
The result is a powerful shift from short-term support to long-term self-sufficiency.
